The Big (Brain) Puzzle: How Do Dogs REALLY Learn?

Revolutionize your approach to training!

Join the amazing Dr. Kathy Murphy as she leads you through the “big picture”: a neurobiological approach to learning and how to apply it to your training—and why reward and punishment are only a small piece of the puzzle.

Monday, November 25th

6pm – 8pm Eastern

Animals learn in a variety of different ways, and yet it is still commonplace in the dog sport world to focus almost exclusively on reinforcement learning. Why is that? And what are we missing out on?

Creating behavioral change is so much more than offering a treat or toy after a dog does something. Training is more than ‘doing’! And learning is a process that results in a change in knowledge, behavior or skills as a result of environmental, experiential, emotional or cognitive factors – not just ‘training’ as we traditionally pursue it.

Having an understanding of how learning and behavioral change take place will revolutionize your approach when creating and adjusting training plans for your dog!

This webinar will be incredibly useful for dog sport enthusiasts training their own dogs, as well as instructors/coaches/team captains who are helping to train other dogs and handlers too!

In this webinar, we will:

  • Explore an overview of animal learning

  • Take a closer look at the ‘quadrants’ of reinforcement, outlining what they are, while exploring some common misconceptions and important limitations

  • Look at different types of learning and how to use them for dog sports training

  • Examine what we really mean by reward. When is a reward rewarding and when is it not?

  • Distinguish transactional training from non-transactional training and look at the role of factors such as novelty, social context and that all important motivation.

  • Strategize how to adjust, adapt, troubleshoot and create amazing training plans.

We will take a dive under the hood of reinforcement to help you take your dog’s learning and motivation to the next level.
