Sue Sternberg

Sue has spent a  lifetime observing dog behavior and trying to make the shelter world a better place for dogs, people and communities. She has been working in shelters and as a dog trainer since 1981. Sue founded her own shelter in 1993 that was featured in an HBO documentary: Shelter Dogs.

Her over 45 years of canine behavior experience includes as a dog control officer, behavior consultant at the ASPCA, shelter owner, a teacher of dog trainers world-wide and is also a successful competitor in a variety of dog sports (currently she is head-over-heels for nose work.) Sue was the 2016 recipient of the APDT’s Lifetime Achievement Award. She has published many books and DVDs  on all aspects of dog behavior, training and assessments, available through www.Dogwise.com and www.TawzerDog.com.

Sue does not feel as old as all that makes her sound, and hopes she still has a lot left to achieve.

For outdoor recreation, Sue explores the desert with her dogs scouting and documenting dinosaur bones and tracks for paleontologists. For indoor recreation, she can be found in front of her laptop studying videos of the minutiae of dog behavior.  She loves all things Star Trek, is an avid tea drinker, and plays the fiddle, too.
